By APD writer Easwaran COLOMBO, Sept. 14 (APD) -- The work of a celebrated Chinese artist is to feature at a top Sri Lankan hotel set to open later this year. In keeping with the nature theme, Shangri-La Hotel, Colombo has commissioned celebrated Chinese artist, Man Fung-Yi to create an elephant structure which will grace the hotel’s lobby and give guests a sense of place. Man Fung-Yi has exhibited in over 100 shows in New York, Paris, London, Sweden, Barcelona, Beijing, Japan, Korea, Taiwan, Hong Kong and Macau. She is actively involved in public art projects and over the years has won many awards issued from Hong Kong, China and the United States. Apart from the Hong Kong Museum of Art, Hong Kong Heritage Museum and Hong Kong Airport Authority, museums in Japan and China have also collected her artworks. In 2009 she became the first and only woman artist to be chosen in Sotheby’s inauguration of their Hong Kong Contemporary Art section. In the same year, another piece of her sculptures was auctioned in Singapore. Her work appeals to men and women from all over the world, thus demonstrating how high quality art can be a universal language that transcends gender and cultural differences. Set to open in late 2017, Shangri-La Hotel, Colombo is the most anticipated luxury hotel opening in Colombo for almost 30 years. The Shangri-La Colombo property is an integral part of the new One Galle Face development project which will see the opening of two residential towers, a high-end shopping centre and modern office space over the next three years. Singapore based architecture firm Chao Tse Ann & Partners is responsible for the design of the tower which will house the hotel. The company has a longstanding relationship with Shangri-La and most recently designed, Shangri-La’s Hambantota Resort & Spa, which opened in June 2016 on Sri Lanka’s southern coast. Shangri-La Hotel, Colombo will offer 500 guestrooms and suites and 41 serviced apartments. The hotel’s five main restaurants are the work of Japanese design studio Bond Design Studio Inc. whose designer Ryoichi Niwata recently won a Platinum A’ Design Award for New York’s Midtown Brewery Restaurant.
